How to tackle the hybrid-work challenge

Is your organisation stretched by the shift to hybrid working? My colleague Matt Barnaby has a tried-and-tested approach that can help: the Impact Sprint. In this short video he explains the idea – with the help of a physical metaphor.

Matt Barnaby: “Let’s say this is your challenge, you can sit and look at that. And you can analyze it, and you can procrastinate, and you can talk about it lots. And the time that it takes to do those things, it’s still a challenge. And if anything, the challenge has probably got slightly bigger.

“So instead of going away, and doing all that kind of deep analysis and discovery, which is an important thing, you know, depending on the context of the challenge, but it’s taken lots of time to do that.

“Think about actually, what do what do we know now that we can do to make this challenge, maybe slightly smaller, maybe slightly easier? And what solutions or outcomes can we can we work towards?

“Now, this is really useful, because if you think about traditional change projects, quite often, there’ll be this long lead-in time, and then there’ll be an implementation. “As of Monday, this is going to stop, and that’s going to start.” And we know that by and large, they seem to fail.

“So when we think about the world of “ways of working” that we’re in in terms of remote or distributed or hybrid, and so on, it’s not a stop-start situation. It really isn’t, because that causes pain for those that are even trying to deliver in it or, or have to experience it.

“Instead, if we take a an Impact Sprint approach, what we’re able to do is engage more openly with the people that are either being affected by the change or can affect the change, to collaborate and create something that is, for want of a better word, “shippable” in terms of a solution, or new way of working.

“And we can put that into play very quickly, and test it, and learn from it.

“And that makes a profound difference to the the the culture that’s willing to accept the change that needs to happen. So for hybrid, I believe, it’s perfect.”
